        Canton Tower is located at an intersection of Guangzhou New City Central Axis and Pearl River, facing directly Haixinsha Island and Zhujiang New Town. It is currently the highest tower in China and the third highest tower in the world. Canton Tower is 600 meters high, with 450 meters of its main body and 150 meters of its antenna, which makes it the highest tower in China and third highest in the world. The tower shows a spirit of dynamic Guangzhou welcoming challenges and embracing the world.

DESIGN INSPIRATION

Design Inspiration

Most of the TV towers in history gave people the same general impression, which is usually about the shape and the height. The invariable shape of a tower has always been “wide at the bottom and narrow at the top”, which the people have been accustomed with. The visitors look forward to experiencing a brand new concept and breakthrough in tower construction design.

At exactly the time when Canton Tower showed its appearance to the world, its fresh and refined impression has attracted worldwide attention. Unlike some designers who turn their understanding of Chinese culture into some traditional symbolic elements, Mark Hemel and Barbara Kuit, the designers of Canton Tower, interpreted the oriental charm in a more amiable manner. The original shape of Canton Tower is a beautiful and elegant lady with a slim figure, and such a unique shape was inspired by the bones of human hip joint. In order to create slenderness and softness of a female, Mark tied the two oval wooden trays up by elastic rubber ropes to form a three-dimensional sculpt. When he rotated the ellipse at the top by 45 degree, a marvelous shape which resembles a fried dough twist appeared. And that’s the inspiration of Canton Tower - a fair lady twists her waist while looking behind.

  • Construction Process

           The mellow style of Canton Tower perfectly matches the Ling Nan Riverside Culture. The uniqueness of the tower is not only embodied in its creative shape, but also owes to full considerations of aesthetics, material, structure, ergonomics and practical function. It was the complex combination of all those elements that caused various difficulties and obstacles during the construction process. Even at the beginning of the project, experts and scholars claimed that it would be an unachievable mission. It is not hard for people to image the extreme hardship of the construction when standing in front of the tower to enjoy the beauty of this new city landmark.
            The foundation of Canton Tower is deep-rooted 40 meters underground. The man-made cast-in-place pile with a 3.8-meter diameter has almost reached the decomposed rocks. “Her slender body” was made of high-strength and high-performance concrete, and the direct pumping reaches 450 meters high, which broke the record of the highest concrete pumping in China.
           The “muscles and bones” of Canton Tower are welded together by 50,000 tons of thick steel plates. The diameter of each steel upright column at the bottom is 2 meters wide and it’s gradually decreased to 1.2 meters on the top. The installation accuracy reached 1/2000 with an error less than 5 millimeters.
           The “outerwear” of Canton Tower was made of high-strength anti-explosion laminated glass. Every single triangle glass on the arc surface is in different size to build the curves.
           Canton Tower has a shape of an open hollow steel structure, with 45-degree counterclockwise torsion from the bottom to the top, which presents as a three-dimensional tilted state. Each section of the tower is different and none of the over ten thousand components is identical, which made the construction measurements and deformation control extremely difficult to manage.
           Due to its height and peculiarity of its shape, there are various difficulties in the construction of steel structure including lifting, measuring, and welding and deformation control. The construction technology of the steel structure became the most distinguishing feature and difficulty of Canton Tower.
           The completion of Canton Tower has turned dreams into reality. The key to overcoming obstacles lied in the innovative technology and the creative thinking. The integration of environment protecting concept allows Canton Tower to become a showcase of new tour tower, which is different from other famous towers. It is true that Canton Tower, which has broken numerous records in construction, has become a milestone in architectural history of the 21st century.
